Luna Lauren Vélez (born November 2, 1964 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American actress . She has a twin sister who is also an actress named Loraine Vélez .

biography

Origin and education

Vélez 'parents emigrated in the early 1950s by Puerto Rico in the United States and settled in Brooklyn , New York down. Lauren's father worked in the police force and moved to Queens with his wife, Lauren, and their seven siblings . Even in elementary school, Lauren decided to pursue a career as an actress.

After graduating from high school , she and her twin sister Loraine attended the " Alvin Ailey Dancing School", the "Acting Studio" and studied Shakespeare with Michael Howard . Vélez had her first job with the musical Dreamgirls . She also worked on some off-Broadway productions on the side.

Career

In 1995 Vélez had her first major television role as Nina Moreno in the television series New York Undercover . Several film productions followed and later nominations for best leading actress at the "Independent Spirit Award" and the "Desi Award". Vélez played in a larger role in 1997 in the prison series Oz - Hell Behind Bars , in which David Zayas (later together with Dexter ) also starred . In 1996 she worked with Al Pacino in the political thriller City Hall .

On June 24, 2006, she won the Long Island International Film Expo Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of Roseanne Crystal in Serial .

From 2006 to 2013, Lauren Vélez played the role of Lt. in the television series Dexter . Maria LaGuerta .
