Shaft is a 2019 American action comedy directed by Tim Story . The film is a continuation of the Shaft film series and makes reference to both the original Shaft film (1971) and the remake Shaft - Any questions? (2000).

action

In 1989, John Shaft, his wife Maya Babanikos and their son JJ were attacked while they were still babies. Shaft manages to fend off the attackers, but there is a break between himself and Maya. This takes their son and raises him alone. The only contact is dubious birthday presents.

25 years later, after studying at MIT , JJ Shaft starts working as a data analyst for the FBI . When his best friend Karim, a former junkie suffering from PTSD who just started a support group called Brothers Watching Brothers with friends, dies of an overdose , he notices irregularities. He begins to investigate on his own, but soon reaches his limits. In the house where Karim is supposed to have bought his drugs, he confronts the dealer, but his investigation ends in the hospital.

So JJ decides to visit his father. Together the two begin to investigate. The generation conflicts put a strain on the cooperation between the two. But the two are more similar than they initially think. You continue to investigate on your own and the lead leads to Shaft's archenemy Gordito. Both survive an assassination attempt and then present their evidence to the FBI. This leads to a raid on a nearby mosque, but no drugs are found there. The media accuse the FBI of Islamophobia and JJ is suspended as a scapegoat. Shortly afterwards, JJ and Shaft also fall out because JJ feels instrumentalized.

JJ and his girlfriend Sasha are investigating further and come across a connection to Brothers Watching Brothers, who take over drug smuggling as a front organization. Sasha is captured while Shaft is able to save his son at the last minute. In their distress, he and his son turn to Shaft Sr. Equipped with a considerable arsenal of weapons and technical skills, it comes to the big showdown in the penthouse of Gordito, in the course of which Sasha is freed, but Shaft catches a bullet for his son.

JJ gets his job back, which he refuses to work with his father and grandfather as a private investigator.

background

After Shaft - Any questions? Released in 2000 through Paramount Pictures , New Line Cinema bought the rights and was planning a new film about John Shaft with Davis Entertainment's producer John Davis . On January 20, 2017, Tim Story was finally hired as a director.

Netflix secured the international distribution rights in October 2017 and was able to show the film on its streaming platform two weeks after its cinema premiere outside the United States. For this, Netflix raised about half the budget of $ 30 million.

Filming began in February 2018. The film was released in theaters in the United States, Canada, Japan and Brazil on June 14, 2019. It opened in Australian and Argentine cinemas on June 28, 2019. Netflix released the film internationally on June 28, 2019.

At the box office, the film disappointed . It started with Men in Black: International and had to compete with Late Night , which had started a week earlier. Although the film reached $ 2.7 million on launch day, the number of viewers collapsed afterwards. The film made just $ 8.7 million in the first week and $ 3.6 million in the second week.

reception

The film was not well received by cinema audiences but also by most of the critics. In a summer when the audience seemed tired of the ongoing sequels (sequel fatigue) , there is an additional burden that Shaft is only partially suitable as a sequel, writes Nate Jones in Vulture : Because everyone probably knows the name and likes the theme music , but have enthusiastic followers Shaft - Any questions? from 2000 not found.

Sidney Schering came to the following conclusion on Filmstarts.de :

"Shaft" has little in common with its predecessors: Jokes about millennials instead of harsh social criticism and a heavily scaled-down visual style bring us a sitcom - "Shaft", whose jokes are mostly on the right track. "
