action
A group of four scientists are exposed to cosmic rays on a mission in space, which gives them superpowers. Each member of the group shows different symptoms: Reed Richards can stretch himself extremely rubbery and stretch all limbs for meters. His ex-girlfriend Susan Storm gains the ability to make himself invisible and create force fields that can repel projectiles or stop objects, her younger brother Johnny Storm can control fire and ignite itself and use this as a kind of jet engine to fly. Due to the influence of the radiation, the pilot Ben Grimm has turned into a super-heavy stony muscleman. When Ben shows himself to his fiancée, she leaves him. The four see their properties as unwanted mutations and begin to construct a machine to reverse the transformations with the help of the same radiation. Only Johnny Storm enjoys the new attention of the public and uses his hero image to make money with it and to impress women. He also invents new nicknames for the four that describe their powers: Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Man, Human Torch, and The Thing. Only slowly do they learn to deal with their new skills and to use them for good.
But Victor von Doom, the project's funder and fifth member of the space expedition, has also been exposed to the rays and uses his new skills to gain more power. His body slowly transforms into a metallic substance, which gives him great powers and with the help of which he can absorb and manipulate electrical energy in order to shoot deadly rays at his opponents. He calls himself Doctor Doom and soon becomes the arch enemy of the Fantastic Four. With a trick he manages to set Ben apart from the others, to transform him back with the help of the machine developed by Reed and to kidnap Reed. He then tries unsuccessfully to kill Johnny Storm with a heat-seeking missile. Together with Ben's help, who has meanwhile rejoined the group and returned to the mutated state through repeated treatment with the machine, the three manage to free Reed. Together they now fight Dr. Doom in the streets of New York. After a long fight in which they first expose his metal body to great heat and then rapidly cool down, the opponent remains frozen and defeated.
The superheroes celebrate their victory on a ship, where Reed applies for Susan's hand and she happily agrees to marry him, whereby she becomes invisible, overwhelmed by her emotions. In the final sequence, Doctor Doom can be seen again, whose motionless metal body is locked up on a container ship and shipped to Latveria. When the electronics on board malfunctioned, it indicated that Doom might still be alive.
background
- The story of the making of the film begins in the mid-1980s. At that time, producer Bernd Eichinger acquired the rights to a film adaptation of Fantastic Four . In 1993, a film was actually made for $ 1.5 million. The sole purpose was to extend the rights, as these would expire if a film was not made by a certain point in time. Oley Sassone directed and was not previously privy to the real purpose of his film project. The actors and the promotion department at Constantin Film also knew nothing of Eichinger's intentions. After its completion, the film was only shown once for Marvel Comics and then archived; it was never shown in a cinema. Nor did it appear on the DVD for the “new” Fantastic Four film in 2005, as had previously been announced.
- The shooting took place from August 23, 2004 to January 28, 2005. Production costs were estimated at around $ 100 million. The film grossed around $ 330 million in cinemas around the world, including around $ 154 million in the United States. 600,347 visitors were counted in German cinemas (as of August 7, 2005).
- It was released in theaters in the United States on July 8, 2005 and in Germany on July 14, 2005.
- Comic book writer Stan Lee , who usually only has a guest appearance in a nameless role in the Marvel films, this time plays an actual character from the Marvel comics: Mailman Willie Lumpkin of the Fantastic Four.
- The name of the ship that Doctor Doom will bring back to his homeland at the end of the film is "Latveria". This is the name of the fictional state in the Marvel comics that Doctor Doom rules. Above the name “Latveria” on the ship there is also “Головка пальца ноги” in Cyrillic, which translates as “the tip of the toe of the foot”.
Reviews
- The film was rated 26% on rottentomatoes.com and described as a "silly, mediocre entry into the superhero genre".
- Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that Fantastic Four was so far behind comic book adaptations like X-Men (2000), Spider-Man (2002) and Batman Begins (2005) that it should be ashamed of being shown in the same theaters to become.
- Kevin Crust called the movie a "superhero sitcom " in the Los Angeles Times and Jackie Cooper called it a "perfect summer movie" to turn your mind off.
- The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
