John Ottman (born July 6, 1964 in San Diego , California ) is an American film composer , film editor , director and producer .

biography

Ottman studied at the USC School of Cinema and Television, where he met Bryan Singer , who was a year his junior and with whom he became friends. In 1988 their first short film together, Lion's Den, was completed, where they still shared the direction. While Singer took over the scriptwriting and directing in later films, Ottman's dual talent showed himself in that he composed the film music and was also responsible for the film editing . The breakthrough of both artists followed in 1995 with The usual Suspects , they later also worked for Der Musterschüler (1998) and Operation Walküre - Das Stauffenberg-Assentat (2008) as well as the comic adaptations X-Men 2 (2003), Superman Returns (2006), X -Men: Future is Past (2014) and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) together. There was no collaboration between the two in the first X-Men film, as Ottman was busy with his own project, Düstere Legenden 2 , for which he worked not only as an editor and composer, but also as a director. For Singer's film, the musical drama Bohemian Rhapsody with Rami Malek in the lead role, Ottman received the Academy Award for best film editing at the 2019 Academy Awards.

Alongside many of his fellow composers, he starred in the 2007 film Finding Kraftland .
