action

The Travis family is actually the decal of a normal American small-town family: Father Ben drives to the office every day, mother Sandy takes care of the household, daughter Penny studies, the eldest son Matt is a love of girls and a member of the school swim team , and so is the youngest son Tim is approaching the end of his school days. Until one day Matt unexpectedly takes his own life: The family is facing the ruins of their life, and everyone is looking for their own way to deal with the whole thing.

While Penny is distracted by the university, father Ben seems to go about his work normally. Sandy suddenly starts doing all the things she never had time to - like smoking joints. And Tim has absolutely no idea how to deal with the events - after all, the general impression was that Matt was always his great role model. When he goes to a friends party and his girlfriend tries to comfort him with a little physical affection, she discovers massive traces of abuse on Tim's body, but he doesn't want to talk about it. Instead, he decides to leave the party with his best friend Kyle and a little drunk. But they don't get far: when Tim is putting the car back on the street, they collide with another car. Except for Tim's broken leg, the boys are not injured, but have to do community hours in a nursing home. Tim, who soon can no longer hear the question about the cause of his broken leg, makes it a habit to reply with "This is a war injury" with very different reactions.

On New Year's Eve , Tim and Kyle don't know what to do with each other and don't feel like having the usual party with their friends. While under the influence of ecstasy, following a sudden impulse, Kyle kisses Tim. The next morning they both wake up together and are unsure of their feelings. Meanwhile, Sandy finds out that Ben has not shown up in the office for months, even though he leaves the house on time every morning - he has taken unpaid leave and sits in the park all day. In addition, she is once again confronted with the fact that she had an affair with her neighbor years ago. The result of this affair is Tim, who, however, knows nothing about it.

Meanwhile, Tim has completely different worries, as he is apparently being harassed by some schoolmates - the result is a bloody nose, among other things. When Kyle happens to find out about it, he looks for the leader of the troop and makes it clear to him in front of the whole school with the help of a broken bottle that he should leave Tim alone. The two are ordered to the director, but get away with a proverbial black eye. When they have to go to the nursing home again in the afternoon, Tim gets something on his already battered nose for the second time - this time from a real war veteran, who feels his honor has been hurt by Tim's answers. Meanwhile, the whole family begins to deal with themselves, and slowly you begin to understand each other.

Tim's father and mother look through his diary and find strange writing in it and on the first page a picture of his brother with a gunshot wound in the head. In the end, it turns out that in this diary he processes his pain in his own special way, but not because of his brother's death.

Reviews

  • According to some critics, leaning Imaginary Heroes at Moonlight Mile by Brad Silberling on, but does not come close to this. The actors were widely praised for their consistently good performance.
  • film-dienst 23/2005: The directorial debut overloads the story with all conceivable problems that can arise in a family tragedy; Nevertheless, thanks to excellent actors, the film unfolds an emotional pull.
