action

Massachusetts 1973: Shortly before her wedding, young Diana Floss happens to be the victim of a crime. A man who rushes into a café to shoot his wife also meets Diana. His wife survives, but Diana dies. Her fiancé Joe, who is not from here, is staying with her parents- in-law , Ben, a realtor, and Jojo, a writer, and now lives in Diana's room.

While Jojo is bathed in sarcasm and writer's block , Ben throws himself into work to cope with the death of his daughter. What the parents don't know: shortly before Diana's death, the two fiancés decided to go their separate ways; Diana wanted to meet her father in said café to confess this to him. Joe just doesn't manage to enlighten Ben and Jojo.

Ben now takes care of Joe and makes him his business partner. Together they should try to land a contract from a man who wants to build a huge shopping center in their city, and therefore buy up all the shops in a row, including the bar “Cal's Place”, where young Bertie “goes to Temporary job “works. Joe had met her a few days earlier as she also works as a postal worker. She had helped him sort out all the wedding invitations from huge mailbags , as they weren't supposed to be sent now.

When the two get closer, Joe gets into a conflict. He wants to avoid Ben and Jojo knowing about it. One night he can't stand it any longer in Diana's room and meets with Bertie. He tells her about his secret and then learns from her that her friend Cal, the owner of the bar, has been missing in Vietnam for three years , but she still cannot get away from him.

A little later the trial of the man who shot Diana begins. Prosecutor Mona Camp urges the man to be arrested. Since the only witness is not admitted because he was too drunk, she asks Joe for a statement. In the courtroom, he is supposed to see to it that the shooter realizes the great loss he has caused Diana's parents and her fiancé. Joe is reluctant to accept. He has scruples about having to lie and testify that he and Diana were still a couple at the time of her death. When he finally sits on the witness stand, he doesn't want to continue playing hide-and-seek. He says that he and Diana broke up at the time and that Diana would have wanted the truth to come out, that she had always been a truth-loving person. In doing so, Joe unintentionally breaks the dam that kept Ben and Jojo from a fulfilling life after the death of their daughter. Suddenly they can let go and at the same time keep Diana in memory for who she really was. Jojo finds a "common thread" again and overcomes her writer's block. Ben realizes that he only continued his work in the real estate business in order to be able to continue his life exactly as it was before Diana's death. Joe gives up his plan to learn Italian and removes the stickers with the Italian vocabulary from various objects. Joe and Bertie finally get together too. They leave the city together and start a new life. In the final shot you can see the two of them looking up at the headliner of Joe's Chevrolet, on which there is a sticker with the word cielo (Italian: sky ).

Reviews

  • “Silberling achieved something great with 'Moonlight Mile'. He staged a tragedy as a comedy without the tragic nature of the event and its consequences for the mourners dissolving into jokes or nonsense. " (Filmstarts.de)
  • “The good actors like Holly Hunter as a nasty public prosecutor, Susan Sarandon as a sarcastic mother and Dustin Hoffman as a restless father can only conditionally comfort the weaknesses of the script (...) And Jake Gyllenhaal tries to fill his leading role by looking naively round as children looking at the world. Here the director has let his actor hang, because Jake Gyllenhaal definitely shows talent. " (Filmhai.de)
  • Tragic-comic film characterized by the director's autobiographical traits, which tells of sad things not in a maudlin, but with a laconic, almost humorous tone. Precise in his observations of human behavior, carefully staged and played. ( Lexicon of International Films )

Awards

Susan Sarandon received the 2003 Sierra Award for Best Supporting Actress at the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards for "Moonlight Mile" and for " Igby ".
