action

Carolyn McDuffy is a member of the Alpha Omega Pi female fraternity . The association decides to prepare young disabled people for participation in the Challenged Games , which should bring the title of Association of the Year . McDuffy works with Pumpkin Romanoff on this. At first she feels uncomfortable, then she falls in love with Romanoff.

McDuffy's surroundings are just as incomprehensible as Romanoff's mother, who has a drinking problem. The woman accuses McDuffy of raping her son . Romanoff trains hard to become the team's best athlete. McDuffy is kicked out of school and fraternity over his mother's accusations.

McDuffy starts a relationship with athlete Kent Woodlands. It is then taken up again at the school and in the connection. Romanoff and friends appear at the Association's party, where Romanoff is dancing with McDuffy. Arguments break out, angry Woodlands is in a car accident after the party. He becomes physically disabled afterwards. McDuffy leaves the connection that is defeated in the battle for the title.

Romanoff wins a race, after which his mother, friends, and McDuffy congratulate him. His mother accepts his relationship with McDuffy.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on July 5, 2002 that the film defied an attempt to describe it. He is "ruthless" and in places "brilliant" ; it forces the viewer to choose an opinion. Ricci handled her treacherous role "fearlessly" ( "Ricci sails fearlessly into the risky material" ).

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on January 15, 2002 that it was difficult to combine satire and sentimentality. The film was "inconsistent" , but since it was intended for a young audience, it could not affect the box office. Ricci is "excellent" in her role; Harris, who used to work for television, was a real find; Blethyn is wasted in her role without substance.

The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Award in 2002 as a competition entry at the Sundance Film Festival . Christina Ricci was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2002.
