Brenda Blethyn Ann , OBE (* 20th February 1946 in Ramsgate , Kent as Brenda Ann Bottle ) is a British actress . She has received several awards for her dramatic and comedic performances on the theater stage, for television and in films.

Life

Brenda Blethyn was the youngest of nine children. The family lived in modest circumstances, but the parents took their child to the cinema every week, where Brenda's love for acting and for film was aroused.

Blethyn worked as a secretary for ten years. After breaking up with her husband, she risked her savings to make her acting hobby her profession. She attended drama school in Guildford and went to London in 1975 , where she played roles in plays by Shakespeare , Oscar Wilde and modern and contemporary dramatists for the Royal National Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company .

Blethyn's theatrical successes earned her television roles, initially in adaptations of plays, including King Lear and Henry VI. by William Shakespeare . She was able to demonstrate her comedic talent through appearances in television series such as Chance in a Million , Yes Minister and Who Dares Wins .

Her breakthrough on the big screen was in 1996 Mike Leigh film Secrets & Lies , in which she played the role of Cynthia Rose Purley, a white woman from the working class, with their now adult black daughter is confronted. Blethyn's performance has been recognized with a number of awards, including her first Oscar nomination. Since then, Brenda Blethyn has appeared in a number of notable films, including Little Voice in 1998 as an insensitive mother (her second Oscar nomination), in 2000 in Whispers as a widow who lives by growing marijuana , and in 2005 as Mrs. Bennet in the Jane Austen film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice .

Brenda Blethyn was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2003 for her services to British theater .

In 2006 she published her autobiography Mixed Fancies . She received two Emmy nominations for her television work : 2001 as Auguste Van Pels in the television film Anne Frank and in 2009 for her guest appearance as Linnie Malcolm and Caroline Cantwell in the series Law & Order: New York (episode: Persona ). Since 2011 she has played the title role in the television series Vera - A very special case .

From 1966 to 1976 she was married to the graphic designer Alan James Blethyn.
