action

The police murderer William Garnett, who converted to Islam in prison, is released early from custody. Accompanied by a probation officer, he tries to build a new life after 18 years of imprisonment. This is countered by the distrust of the local sheriff, whose deputy Garnett once shot, as well as Garnett's own inability to bring his violent outbursts under control. As Garnett's criminal accomplice from old times mistreats his new girlfriend, Garnett lies in wait for him and kills him.

Reviews

Kino.de assessed: “Rachid Bouchareb […] dares to remake José Giovanni's crime classic 'Endstation Schafott' (1973). José Giovanni, who himself spent many years in prison, dealt with the injustices of the French judicial system in his novel and the later film adaptation. Bouchareb moves the plot to today's America, Forest Whitaker and Harvey Keitel embody the two sides of the law in this merciless drama - in place of Alain Delon and Jean Gabin. A tragedy of power, abuse of power, revenge and reconciliation. "

At the Berlinale 2014, Hannah Pilarczyk judged: La voie de l'ennemi with its “widescreen shots of dusty horizons and glowing sunsets” would be very “promising. Unfortunately, at the moment of the promise, there is no escalation or even fulfillment. "
