Yasmina Khadra , Arabic ياسمينة خضراء, DMG Yāsmīna Ḫaḍrāʾ ( pseudonym for Mohammed Moulessehoul ; born January 10, 1955 in Kenadsa , Algeria ), is an Algerian writer who lives in exile in France.

Life

Mohammed Moulessehoul was sent to a military school by his father, an army officer, at the age of nine. In his autobiography L'écrivain (German: The writer of Kolea ), published in France in 2001 , he describes the beginning of his passion for writing. In this way he was able to preserve a free space as an adolescent, which he missed very much in the cadet dormitories and during collective drill .

He became a high officer in the Algerian army, where he began to write and publish literarily demanding, time-critical detective novels. They first appeared in French under his own name. In order to circumvent the strict censorship regulations that were tightened at a certain point in time , he began to publish from Morituri under his wife's two first names (Yasmina Khadra: “green jasmine blossom”). After he fled into exile with his family in France at the end of 2000, he revealed the secret of his identity. Out of respect for the achievements of his wife, who laid the economic basis for the new beginning in France through travel and negotiations with European authorities and publishers, he decided to keep the nom de plume Yasmina Khadra as his public author name (see chimeras afterword). Today he lives in Aix-en-Provence .

He became internationally known with his Algiers trilogy . In the three detective novels published in 1997 and 1998 ( Morituri , Doppelweiß , Herbst der Chimären ), he describes, from the perspective of the incorruptible inspector Brahim Llob, the everyday drama of the Algerian present, which is characterized by bomb attacks, corruption and the lack of economic prospects for large sections of the population. Khadra wrote these novels with a European (French) readership in mind. He had previously published the two novels La Foire des Enfoirés and Le dingue au bistouri with Commissioner Llob in Algeria. With these Llob novels he had succeeded in anchoring the genre detective novel in Algerian literature for the first time. All five novels mentioned are based on the formal criteria of the French roman noir . According to the author of the epilogue Beate Burtscher-Bechter, Llob can be freely translated with the German phrase hard shell, soft core , which stands for empathetic and compromising male personalities.

The trilogy was followed in 2004 by the crime novel Nacht über Algiers , in which Llob becomes the plaything of the mighty in post-colonial Algeria. The assassin , a novel about an Islamist terrorist in Tel Aviv , received several literary prizes in 2006 . The film adaptation The Attack was awarded as the best literary film in 2013 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. About this novel, Khadra says: “For you as a European it is impossible to understand terrorism . … I am an Arab… I know her up close. I met her on the battlefield. "

However, Khadra does not allow itself to be absorbed by the western point of view, but pleads for getting to know and understanding each other. In an interview with SWR in 2006 he said: “The West interprets the world as it suits it. He develops certain theories that meet his worldview, but which do not always correspond to reality. As a Muslim, I propose a new perspective on Afghanistan, on religious fanaticism and what I call religiopathy. My novel 'Die Schwalben von Kabul' gives readers in the West a chance to understand the core of a problem that it otherwise only curses in superficially. Since fanaticism is a threat to everyone, I am helping to understand the causes and backgrounds. Maybe then you'll find a way to get it under control. "
