Amin Jaafari, a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship , works as a surgeon in a Tel Aviv hospital . He is married to Sihem Jaafari, who is also from Palestine . Both feel well integrated in Israel and are happy. But one day a bomb goes off in a restaurant near the hospital. Amin cares for the injured in the hospital. When he went to his home for a break, he was contacted by the police. He is supposed to identify the body of his wife. The police tell Amin that his wife is the suicide bomber. Amin, who is initially still convinced that it was just a mistake, falls into shock. He cannot believe that Sihem, a beautiful, intelligent, self-determined woman with many Jewish friends, is supposed to be a fundamentalist assassin.

After he buries her, he finds a letter from his wife that finally gives him the certainty that she was the assassin. Amin wants to understand the background to the crime and decides to travel to the autonomous Palestinian city of Bethlehem . A friend from the hospital, Kim Yehuda, accompanies him there.

In Bethlehem, Amin meets relatives, friends, allies and admirers of his wife. Bit by bit he compiles a new picture of his wife from the information obtained. But his research causes unrest. Amin is repeatedly the victim of violence and initially returns to Tel Aviv with Kim. But he's not giving up on his search yet. A clue finally leads him to the city of Jenin , which is also in the Palestinian autonomous region. Here he learns more about his wife's motives and the group with whom she prepared her act in the underground in Tel Aviv.

Finally, he ends up with his great-uncle and his family and feels comfortable for the first time since the attack. But that doesn't last long. After another family member has carried out an attack, the Israeli military is on the doorstep. Amin and his family watch as they bulldozer the family home. In response, his niece Fatem Jaafari sets out for Jenin with the plan to carry out another assassination attempt. Amin follows her and wants to stop her. But he is too late and is killed in the attack.
