German Crime Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Crime Prize is an undoped German literary prize for novels from the genre of crime fiction . Each year a jury awards three German-language first editions in the national and international categories .

history

The prize was launched in 1985 by the Bochum Crime Archive (consisting of the journalist Reinhard Jahn and the copywriter Werner Puchalla) as the first German-language critic's prize in the genre of crime literature and has been awarded every January since then. In contrast to the Friedrich Glauser Prize , which is awarded by the group of authors Das Syndikat , the jurors are literary scholars, critics and booksellers. According to the company's own definition, the prize is intended to honor novels that “give the genre new impulses with original content and literary skills.” The best new publications of a year by German-language crime fiction authors are awarded places 1 to 3. In a second category, there are also three prizes for newly published works by international authors. As a rule, the prize is not awarded at a public event, but only announced to the public. A certificate in the form of an original graphic was awarded until 1998, since then it has been undoped.

Electoral process

No books will be submitted for the award. Instead, each juror chooses his or her favorites from the new publications of the past year. Digital publications are not eligible. The Bochum Crime Archive evaluates the votes after scoring points. So there is no common base of books that all jurors have read. Kathrin Passig criticized the procedure: "From a purely technical point of view, books by new and little-known authors therefore have little chance of being noticed by enough jury members and subsequently being nominated."

Award winners

The most successful crime writers in the national category are the Swiss Peter Zeindler , who won the German Crime Prize four times between 1986 and 1992 (always 1st place) and the German Friedrich Ani , who was awarded five times between 2002 and 2013 (one place 1, four times 2nd place). Between 1986 and 1996, the American Ross Thomas, who died in 1995, won the German Crime Prize four times in the international category (always first place).
