Donald Ray Pollock (born December 23, 1954 in Knockemstiff (Ohio) ( Ross County )) is an American writer.

Life

Pollock grew up in Knockemstiff, Ohio, now a ghost town , and lived all of his adult life in Chillicothe . At 17 he dropped out of school and worked first in a slaughterhouse , then in the local paper mill and as a truck driver.

At 45, Pollock began writing a short story called Bactine and submitted it for publication in The Journal , the literary magazine of the Ohio State University's Department of English Literature . One of the editors was so impressed with the story that she persuaded Pollock to join the university's creative writing program in 2005 .

In 2008 Doubleday published his collection of short stories called Knockemstiff , and the New York Times regularly published his election reports from South Ohio during the 2008 US presidential election . His work has appeared in various literary magazines including Epoch , Sou'wester , Granta , Third Coast , River Styx , The Journal , Boulevard and PEN America .

Prizes and awards

In 2009 Pollock received the Robert W. Bingham Prize and the Devil's Kitchen Award for Prose from Southern Illinois University Carbondale . His second book, The Devil All The Time led Publishers Weekly as one of ten books of the year 2011. The French edition was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix de littérature policière and the Prix Mystère de la critique excellent. In 2013, The Devil's Crafts won a German Crime Prize (3rd place in the International Crime) and in 2017 Die himmlische Tafel reached 1st place in the German Crime Prize (International).
