Faster than Death is a novel by the American author Josh Bazell .

The novel has been translated into more than thirty languages ​​and has been a bestseller in many countries. He was also awarded the German Crime Prize in 2011 .

The novel deals with the story of a mafia dropout who the past catches up with. The main character Pietro Brnwa alias Dr. Peter Brown is a cynical doctor at Manhattan Catholic Hospital in New York . He's part of the witness protection program after dropping out as a killer. The novel tells his story alternately in the present view as an assistant doctor and the past view as a mafioso. The storylines converge as the story progresses when a former companion reveals him.

The original title Beat the Reaper uses the personified form of death in the sense of the grim reaper . In the German translation, the term Schnitter is used.
