Horst Bieber

Horst Bieber (born January 12, 1942 in Essen ; † May 27, 2020 in Hamburg ) was a German journalist and crime writer .

Live and act

Bieber studied history , philosophy and German at the Ruhr University in Bochum . There he was with a dissertation on the journalist Paul Rohrbach doctorate . He started as a journalist for the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . In 1970 he switched to the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , where he a. a. wrote about Franquism , the Carnation Revolution , Sandinism and Cuba under the regime of Fidel Castro . In 1990 he was promoted to chief of the service of time ; he held this position until his early retirement in 1997 due to a serious illness.

Horst Bieber first wrote historical non-fiction books, later he published his first crime novel Sackgasse (1982). In other novels he mainly took up social and political issues, for example data protection , the coexistence of the secret services or problems with police investigative work. His strengths were his gift for precise observation and his pronounced talent for storytelling.

In 1987, Bieber received the German Crime Prize for his work His last mistake . Horst Bieber died in Hamburg in May 2020 at the age of 78.
