Cora Stephan (born April 7, 1951 in Strang near Bad Rothenfelde ) is a German publicist and writer. In 1998 her first detective novel appeared under the pseudonym Anne Chaplet , and in 2010 her first book as Sophie Winter .

Life

Stephan grew up in Osnabrück and graduated from the Halepaghen School in Buxtehude . She studied in Hamburg and Frankfurt and graduated in 1973 with the state examination for teaching. After further studies in political science , economics and history , she received her doctorate in 1976 on the subject of "The History of German Social Democracy in the 19th Century".

From 1976 to 1984 she held a teaching position at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From 1979 to 1981 she worked with the so -called left radical wind orchestra . She also worked as a lecturer, u. a. for the Suhrkamp publishing house , and as a translator and radio presenter . In 1980 she was an editor at Pflasterstrand , in 1983 culture editor at Hessischer Rundfunk and from 1985 to 1987 a correspondent in the Bonn office of Spiegel . Since 1987 she has worked as a freelance book author, essayist , commentator and lecturer.

She wrote for many German-language daily and weekly newspapers and (until 2000) for magazines such as Kursbuch and Merkur, as well as for the liberal authors and debate magazine Swiss Month . Until the beginning of 2017 she wrote a bi-weekly column for Wirtschaftswoche Online and currently regularly for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and the NDR . She is also one of the regular authors of the Axis des Guten weblog  . There are also numerous radio reports, including on Deutschlandradio  and NDR.

In 2011 she published the book  Angela Merkel. A mistake,  a "personal settlement" with the  Chancellor . Arno Widmann found in the Frankfurter Rundschau that the author did not settle accounts with Merkel, but with the image she had made of the Chancellor. Readers who are not familiar with Stephen's earlier enthusiasm for Merkel would not be able to do much with the book. He also criticized Stephan's "shrill sound" and "excitement". Wolfgang Storz criticizes that the author did not actually write a book about the politician, but rather "a manifesto, riddled with platitudes" - on the other hand, the reviewer of Stern magazine found : "A book that is impressive in its stringency - for all those who like Stephan once believed in the reform chancellor or in the climate chancellor ... A required reading for all those whose political horizon and language are not limited by the yardstick of perpetual political correctness ”. For the then editor of the Handelsblatt , Gabor Steingart , the book is, also according to the same review in Stern , "a necessary imposition for the Chancellor".

Daniela Janser counts the late Cora Stephan on the new right . Your article would offer an example of "how reactionary and racist ideas is normalized persevere through increasingly permeable journalistic boundaries between so-called middle-class newspapers and right blogs." Also She writes regularly for the magazine peculiar free , which by the Kronen Zeitung "very conservative to extreme right" as is classified.

In 1998, Stephan celebrated the end of pacifism in her book The Crafts of War , praising the “moderate war”. It can be domesticated, "the beast" can be chained up like a house dog and occasionally let go if it serves the state. In 2011 she said in an interview that the welfare state was “institutionalized waste”. As a simple taxpayer, you ask yourself “why you shouldn't go hard right away” in Angela Merkel. She mistakenly calls thermal insulation the "burqa for the house". It conjures up the "magic that tradition, rituals and self-celebration can convey" and calls for the courage to use "patriotic vocabulary".

In March 2016 her autobiographical novel From Today My Name Is Margo was published , in which, for the NZZ reviewer Claudia Schwartz, the upheavals in German-German history merge with the heroine's struggle for survival to form a moral history of the 20th century. Stephan draws the heroine's path in all ambivalence, touching but not sentimental, so that she will be remembered for a long time.

Stephan lives in  Ilsdorf  in the Vogelsberg district and in  Laurac-en-Vivarais  (southern France). She is a member of the Friedrich A. von Hayek Society .
