Gert Heidenreich (born March 30, 1944 in Eberswalde ) is a German writer , journalist , radio and audio book speaker .

Life

After graduating from high school at the humanistic Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt (1962) and conscientious objection at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich , Gert Heidenreich studied German , sociology , philosophy and theater studies . In 1965 he married Elke Heidenreich , b. Rieger.

From 1966 he worked as a journalist for Bayerischer Rundfunk , then from 1969 as a freelance writer and speaker. In 1970 he and other artists founded the Theater in der Kreide (TiK) in Munich and launched the Pop Sunday show in the newly created radio program Bayern 3 with “progressive” young literature and then avant-garde rock music. As a journalist and speaker he worked for various radio companies, wrote for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and wrote reports for the travel magazine Merian . Several trips took him to the Sahara and the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. On behalf of the Goethe Institute , he traveled to India, Africa, Japan and Central Asia. He has translated works from American, British and Kazakh literature. His voice can be heard in numerous audio books as well as in a large number of television documentaries (including The Great Criminal Cases , Adventure Research / Lesch's Kosmos ). In addition to his own books, he has read numerous texts by other authors as a speaker, for example Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings .

Gert Heidenreich is a member of the PEN Center Germany . From 1991 to 1995 he was President of the West German PEN Club. His efforts to unite this with its East German counterpart failed and sparked heated discussions. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . From 2011 to 2015 he was director of the literature department there.

He has been married to the family therapist and author Gisela Heidenreich since 1979 . There are two sons from this marriage. Heidenreich lives in Seefeld near Starnberg. He counts himself among the old 68ers , whose goals and effects he critically examines. His sister Anje Eibl was married to the German literary scholar Karl Eibl .
