The Okres Námestovo is an administrative unit in the far north of Slovakia with 62,879 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and an area of 691 square kilometers. It borders the Okresy Čadca in the west, Dolný Kubín and Tvrdošín in the south and the Polish Lesser Poland Voivodeship in the east and north.
The Okres in the traditional region of Orava (Eng. Arwa ) is mostly located in a mountainous landscape, represented by the Oravská Magura in the south and Podbeskydská vrchovina and Oravské Beskydy (part of the Beskydy Mountains ) in the north. The Oravská kotlina basin is located around the town of Námestovo . The main rivers of the Okres are the Biela Orava ( White Arwa ), flowing from the west and the Polhoranka from the north. Both flow into the Arwa reservoir in the southeast. The highest mountain is the Babia hora ( 1723 m nm ) on the Polish border. Large parts of the Okres are covered by the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area .
In terms of traffic, the state road I / 78 runs through the Okres in a north-south direction and the state road II / 520 in a west-east direction. There is no railway connection, but the Oravská lesná železnica existed in the years 1918–1971 , a forest railway in the Bosnian gauge (760 mm), which remains now belong to the Vychylovka forest railway .
Historically, the district lies entirely in the former Arwa county (see also the list of historical counties in Hungary ). In the administrative division of Czechoslovakia from 1960–1990 he was part of the Okres Dolný Kubín, within the Stredoslovenský kraj ( Central Slovak Regional Association ).
