Statistics information about the Okres on statistics.sk

The Okres Žilina is an administrative unit in the north of Slovakia with 158,279 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and an area of 815 square kilometers. Clockwise it borders on the Okresy Kysucké Nové Mesto , Čadca , Dolný Kubín , Martin , Prievidza , Ilava and Považská Bystrica (the last three mentioned in Trenčiansky kraj ), Bytča and again Čadca.

The landscape varies from the Žilinská kotlina basin , which stretches from Fačkov via Rajec and Žilina to around Terchová and where the majority of the population is concentrated, over the mountainous regions of Kysucká vrchovina in the northeast and Súľovské vrchy in the west, to the Javorníky mountains northwest of Žilina and especially the Little Fatra , which forms the eastern border of the Okres with both subdivisions Lúčanská Fatra in the south and Krivánska Fatra in the north. The main river is the Waag , which flows in an east-west direction and is stowed here in the reservoirs Žilina and Hričov . In Žilina the rivers Kysuca from the north and Rajčanka from the south flow into the stream ; Another tributary is the Varínka from the east.

In terms of traffic, the importance is particularly linked to the city of Žilina. In the city, 1st-order streets 61 and 18 ( E 50 ) running in west-east direction, 1st-order street 11 ( E 75 ) going north and 1st-order street 64 coming from the south join the Žilina ring road , 1st order street 60 . The network is supplemented by state roads II / 507, II / 517 and II / 583. To the west and north of Žilina is a section of the D3 motorway , which only serves as a feeder to the D1 motorway to Bratislava .

Three double-track lines also meet in Žilina: from Bratislava , from Bohumín (Czech Republic) and from Košice . The city is thus roughly in the middle of the Slovakian railway connection Bratislava – Košice. There is also a local railway from Rajec .

To the west of Žilina is the Žilina Airport .

Historically, the district lies entirely in the former Trenčín county (see also the list of historical counties of Hungary ). In the administrative division of Czechoslovakia in the years 1960–1990 he was part of the Okres Žilina, within the Stredoslovenský kraj ( Central Slovak Regional Association ).
