Horný Hričov (Hungarian Felsőricsó - until 1907 Felsőhricsó ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 789 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

geography

The municipality is located at the upper end of the Považské podolie valley landscape on the left bank of the Váh , between the Súľovské vrchy mountains to the south and the Javorník mountains to the north of the village. The Hričov reservoir east of the village is named after the municipality. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 318  m nm and is eight kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring municipalities are Svederník in the north, Divinka in the northeast, Žilina (district Žilinská Lehota ) in the east and southeast, Dolný Hričov in the south and Kotešová in the west.

history

Chapel in Horný Hričov

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1208 as Rizoi and was then part of the territory of the Hričov Castle . In the second half of the 16th century Horný Hričov was attached to the Bytča domain ; In 1598 the village had 12 houses. In 1828 there were 61 houses and 487 inhabitants, whose main sources of income were forestry, agriculture, sheep breeding and weaving.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Until the end of the first Czechoslovak Republic, two brickworks and a saw worked in the village. In 1920 and 1924 large parts of Horný Hričov burned down. In 1962, part of the municipality was flooded by the newly completed Hričov reservoir.

Historical names include Superior Herichou (1282), Felsew Rihcho (1469), Horny Hrčov (1773) and Horní Hryčov (1808).

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 769 inhabitants in Horný Hričov, 709 of whom were Slovaks and two Czechs . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 57 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

613 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 17 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and two residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Apostolic Church and one to the Pentecostal movement. 55 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 78 inhabitants has not been determined.
