Krasňany (until 1927 in Slovak also "Krašňany"; in Hungarian Krasznyán - until 1907 Krasznyan ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1645 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the eastern part of the Žilinská kotlina basin on the lower reaches of the Varínka at the confluence with the Kúr brook . In the east, the municipality extends into the Little Fatra , up to the Malý Kriváň mountain ( 1671  m nm ). The center of the village is at an altitude of 380  m nm and is twelve kilometers from Žilina .

history

Country castle in the village

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1354 as Karazna , but is of older origin. This year the village was repopulated according to Silleiner law, with the first residents being granted tax exemption for 20 years. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the estate of the nearby Starý hrad . In 1828 there were 56 houses and 466 residents, who were mainly employed in agriculture, and there were limestone quarries in the municipality.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,430 inhabitants in Krasňany, of which 1,236 were Slovaks, six Czechs and one Moravian, one Polish and one Ukrainian; 167 inhabitants were of a different ethnic group. 18 residents did not provide any information. 1161 residents belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, seven residents to the Evangelical Church AB, six residents to the Old Catholic Church, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident to the Evangelical Church and the Czechoslovak Hussite Church; one resident was of a different denomination. 29 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 222 inhabitants has not been determined.

Attractions

  • Baroque style chapel
  • two country castles right next to each other, which have been connected by a connecting wing since the 19th century. The older country castle was built in 1667–78 in a U-shaped plan, the newer one towards the end of the 17th century in an L-shaped plan, and both were the seat of the Pongrácz family .
