Dolná Tižina (Hungarian Alsótizsény - until 1907 Alsótizsina ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1,432 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

The community is located in the northeastern foothills of the Žilinská kotlina basin in a small side valley of the Varínka river . The southeast part of the municipality covers part of the Little Fatra , the highest point is 1466  m nm high. The center of the village is at an altitude of 440  m nm and is 15 kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring communities are Stráža in the north, Belá in the northeast, east and southeast and Krasňany in the southwest and west.

history

The original place Tižina was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1439 as Chysina and was part of the territory of Starhrad , later the Strečno Castle . In 1598 the village owned a mill and 23 houses, in 1720 there were 21 taxpayers living in the village. In 1784 the village had 205 houses, 212 families and 1226 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 340 houses and 898 inhabitants who were employed as foresters and farmers. The population decline was preceded by a typhoid and plague epidemic at the beginning of the 19th century.

After 1863 the original parish was divided into parts of Dolná Tižina and Horná Tižina ; the second-named place has been part of the Terchová municipality since 1991 .

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

Historical names include Chyssyna (1518), Czizinna (1598), Tižina (1773) and Tissina (1786).

population

According to the 2011 census, Dolná Tižina had 1290 inhabitants, of which 1253 were Slovaks and three Czechs . Four residents indicated a different ethnic group and 30 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

1212 inhabitants supported the Roman Catholic Church, four inhabitants joined the Old Catholic Church and one inhabitant joined the Evangelical Church AB. 19 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 54 inhabitants was not determined.

In the neighboring municipality of Stráža there is a connection to the 2nd order road 583 (Žilina – Terchová– Párnica ). The nearest train station is in Varín, seven kilometers away, on the Žilina – Košice railway line .
