Šuja (Hungarian Suja ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 328 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

The municipality is located in the southwest part of the Žilinská kotlina basin on the upper reaches of the Rajčanka . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 467  m nm and is two and a half kilometers from Rajec and 23 kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring communities are Rajec in the north, Ďurčiná in the east, Rajecká Lesná in the south and again Rajec in the west.

history

From the time around the turn of the times there was a settlement of the Iron Age Puchau culture near Šuja, in addition to which one found coins of the Eravisker during archaeological investigations .

The current place was first mentioned in writing in 1393 as Chya and was part of the territory of the Lietava Castle . Other historical names include Schwgye (1474), Swya (1496), Suya (1598) and Sujo (1786). In 1598 there were 11 houses in the village, in 1720 there were eight taxpayers, in 1784 there were 45 houses, 59 families and 304 residents. In 1828 there were 30 houses and 409 inhabitants who were employed as shepherds, beekeepers and farmers.

Until 1918, the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then belonged to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Gravel sand was mined near the town.

According to the 2011 census, there were 310 inhabitants in Šuja, including 304 Slovaks and one Moravian . Five residents gave no information about their ethnicity .

275 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each for the Evangelical Church AB and the Greek Catholic Church; five residents professed a different denomination. 15 residents had no denomination and 13 residents had no denomination.

Cesta I. triedy 64 runs through Šuja on its section between Žilina and Prievidza . The Rajec terminus on the Žilina – Rajec railway is two and a half kilometers away.
