Divina (up to the 19th century in Slovak “Veľká Divina”; Hungarian Nagydivény - until 1907 Nagydivina ) is a place and a municipality in the Okres Žilina of the Žilinský kraj with 2361 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) .

The municipality is located in the Javorník Mountains in the valley of the Divinský potok and is nine kilometers from Žilina .
The community is divided into Divina and Lúky (incorporated in 1907), which is located in a side valley. There are also other hamlets in the mountains.
history
The first known mention of the place Divina comes from the year 1325, when the area of the place is described. Since the end of the 14th century, the emphasis has been known as Groß-Divina opposite the smaller village Divinka on the Waag further south. Later the village was tributary to the Budatín estate . In 1828 there were 214 houses and 1437 inhabitants in Divina who were engaged in agriculture, forestry, cattle breeding and wire binding. In the 19th century there was a schnapps distillery in the village.
On July 24, 1837, a meteorite fell to earth just a few meters from the local church . It is a 10.75 kg bronzite - chondrite with a high iron content. The piece is proven today in the National Museum in Budapest.
