Veľká Čierna (until 1927 in Slovak "Veľká Černá"; in Hungarian Nagycserna ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 354 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the northern part of the so-called Domaniža basin ( Domanižianska kotlina in Slovak ), surrounded on three sides by the Súľovské vrchy mountains. The Čierňanka brook flows through the center of the village . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 480  m nm and is 20 kilometers from Považská Bystrica and 25 kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring municipalities are Malá Čierna in the north, Rajec in the east, Malé Lednice in the south, Prečín in the west and Bodiná in the northwest.

history

At Veľká Čierna there was a settlement of the Puchau culture at the turn of the times .

The current place was first mentioned in writing in 1361 as Nagh Cherna and belonged to the estate of the local Csernyánszky family . In 1598 there were 24 houses in Veľká Čierna. In 1720 10 taxpayers lived in the village, in 1784 the village had 43 houses, 43 families and 252 residents. In 1828 there were 14 houses and 249 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and forest workers.

Until 1918, the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then belonged to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Veľká Čierna had 357 inhabitants, including 349 Slovaks , four Czechs , two Poles and one Moravian . One resident gave no information about ethnicity .

343 residents admitted to the Roman Catholic Church and two residents to the Evangelical Church AB. Three residents were non-denominational and nine residents had no denomination.
