Stráňavy (Hungarian Felsőosztorány - until 1907 Sztrányavi ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1870 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .
geography
The village is located in the eastern part of the Žilinská kotlina basin in the valley of the Stráňavský creek , which flows into the Váh dammed in the Žilina reservoir . To the south and east the area merges into the Little Fatra and in the south the brook valley follows up to the mountain Minčol ( 1364 m nm ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 420 m nm and is ten kilometers from Žilina .
At the beginning of the village there is a thermal bath with a water temperature of around 24-26 ° C.
Neighboring communities are Strečno in the northeast, Vrútky and Martin (district Záturčie) in the southeast (across the Little Fatra), Višnové in the southwest and Žilina in the west (district Trnové) and north (district Mojšova Lúčka).
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1356 as Ztrany and belonged to the estate of the Strečno castle as well as to the families Sztrányay and Nedeczky . In 1598 there were 22 houses and a mill, in 1828 there were 69 houses and 676 inhabitants who were employed in forestry, agriculture and cattle breeding.
Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Stráňavy had 1803 inhabitants, of which 1,753 were Slovaks, ten Czechs, three Magyars and one German and one Pole each; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 28 residents gave no answer. 1605 residents belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, three residents each to the Evangelical Church AB and three to the Evangelical Church, two residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Bahaitum ; five residents were of other denominations. 112 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 62 inhabitants has not been determined.

Infrastructure and traffic
The basic infrastructure is well developed, with existing water and gas pipes, sewerage and connection to a sewage treatment plant and a cable television network. The community runs a kindergarten and elementary school and there is a post office. In terms of transport, the village can be reached via an intersection with 1st order road 18 (E 50), the nearest train station is in Žilina .
