The Cesta I. triedy 18 ( Slovak for '1st order street 18'), short I / 18 , is a 1st order street in Slovakia . It crosses almost all of northern Slovakia and is considered an important west-east road within Slovakia. Larger cities are Žilina , Martin , Ružomberok , Liptovský Mikuláš , Poprad , Prešov and Michalovce . In the section from Žilina to Prešov it is to be or is partially replaced by the D1 motorway .

The former section Czech border – Žilina-Košická has been distributed to three other road sections since August 1, 2015, as follows: Section Czech border – Bytča was incorporated into I / 10 , Bytča – Žilina into I / 61 as its extension and the Žilina city line became part of the new I / 60 .

Žilinský kraj

The I / 18 begins in the east of Žilina on the 1st order 60 and leaves the city eastwards through the Žilinská kotlina basin , then through the Domašín meander near Strečno , a breakthrough valley of the Waag in the Little Fatra .

The road then touches the north of the traditional Turz landscape ( Turiec in Slovak ) around the cities of Vrútky and Martin and then passes another breakthrough valley in the Great Fatra ( Kraľovany meander) and enters the historical Liptov landscape . The long Lower Tatras basin between the Tatras and the Low Tatras begins in Ružomberok . It then runs along the south bank of the Liptov reservoir , comes to the town of Liptovský Mikuláš and runs through the upper Waag Valley, through Liptovský Hrádok , Hybe and Východná , before reaching the Kraj border at Važec .

From Žilina to Poprad, the road copies the Žilina – Košice railway line .

Prešovský kraj

At Štrba the road reaches its highest point (around 900  m nm ) and enters the historical Spiš , first through the modern town of Svit and then the old Poprad on the river of the same name . It then leaves the Poprad Valley and goes through the hilly landscape of the Hornádska kotlina basin , the Spišský Štvrtok municipality and through the historic Levoča . After another 15 km you pass the medieval town of Spišské Podhradie with its large Spiš Castle .

It leaves the Spiš at the Branisko Pass (replaced by the Branisko Tunnel since 2003 ) and follows a number of the municipalities in the Šarišská vrchovina mountains before reaching another regional capital - Prešov . Here the traffic can turn towards Košice . Shortly after Prešov, in Lipníky , the street loses the status of a European route, which here turns towards Svidník and Poland . It then runs through the Topľatal and reaches Vranov nad Topľou and the Eastern Slovakia lowlands . Shortly after Nižný Hrabovec the road leaves the Prešovský kraj.

Košický kraj

The Košický kraj has only a short part of 20 km. In Strážske the road turns south and ends in Michalovce at 1st order road 19 (former 1st order road 50 ), not far from the Semplin reservoir and the Laborec river .

Expansion and replacement

The road has four lanes only in short areas. There are short stretches in Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš , the Prešov passage and the subsequent route to Kapušany (12 km) and about 6 km near Michalovce. In some places there are slow traffic lanes (e.g. at Strečno and Dravce).

In the future, the road between Žilina and Prešov will be replaced by the D1 motorway. As of December 2015, this has been implemented on the Vrútky – Turany and Ivachnová – Prešov routes.
