Svidník (German Oberswidnik ) is a city in eastern Slovakia . It is the administrative seat of the Okres Svidník of the same name and the center of the Ruthenian population in Slovakia.
The community was created in 1944 through the merger of the communities Nižný Svidník (Hungarian Alsószvidnik or since 1907 Alsóvízköz ) and Výšný Svidník (German rarely Oberswidnik , Hungarian Felsöszvidnik or since 1907 Felsövízköz ).

Svidník in the wide valley of the upper Ondava is surrounded by the ridges of the Ondau Mountains ( Ondavská vrchovina ), a foothill of the Lower Beskids . The Duklapass - at 502 m above sea level the lowest Carpathian pass ever - is about 20 kilometers from Svidník in a north-easterly direction.
