Kapišová (Hungarian Kapisó , Rusyn Капішова / Kapischowa ) is a municipality in the north-east of Slovakia , with a population of 447 (December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Svidník , a district of Prešovský kraj . In the past, the place had a large Russian population, but this has largely been assimilated by the Slovak population today.
geography
The municipality is located in the Low Beskydy Mountains in the valley of the Kapišovka stream , off the main road to the Duklapass , five kilometers from Svidník .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as Capyssowa in 1548 , after it was founded around 1520. Kapišová was formerly part of the Makovica estate (seat in the Zborov castle ). In 1828 there are 46 houses and 342, the Greek Catholic Church was completed in 1892.
A large tank battle took place above the village in late 1944 as part of the Eastern Carpathian operation in World War II, which is why the valley is now known as Údolie smrti ("Valley of Death").
