Vyšný Komárnik (Hungarian Felsőkomárnok - until 1907 Felsőkomarnik is a municipality in) north-east of Slovakia with 78 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník , a circle of kraj Prešovský lies and traditional landscape Šariš is counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the Low Beskydy Mountains in a small basin near the source of the Ladomirka ( Ondava catchment area ). The Duklapass runs over the main Carpathian ridge north of the municipality . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 441 m nm and is 19 kilometers from Dukla (in Poland) and Svidník and 71 kilometers from Prešov .
Neighboring communities are Dukla ( Barwinek and Zyndranowa , PL) in the north and east, Nižný Komárnik in the south and Krajná Bystrá in the west.
history
Vyšný Komárnik was first mentioned in writing in 1600 as Fölsö Komornik and was part of the Makovica castle estate . In 1713-14 the village was devastated by Polish raids. In 1787 there were 25 houses and 164 inhabitants and in 1828 there were 34 houses and 262 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture. A saw worked here from 1865 until the First World War .
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. The village was badly affected both in the First and especially in the Second World War , as the area around the Duklapass was the site of hard fighting between Nazi German troops and the advancing Red Army as part of the Carpathian-Duklin operation in late 1944 . On October 6, 1944, Vyšný Komárnik became the first liberated municipality in the restored Czechoslovakia, but at the same time it was completely destroyed by fighting. It was rebuilt after the war.
Division General Jaroslav Vedral , who was killed during the liberation in the Duklapass on October 6, 1944, is buried in the community.
population
According to the 2011 census, Vyšný Komárnik had 75 inhabitants, of which 47 were Slovaks and 26 Russian. Two residents gave no information in this regard. 61 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, five residents the Roman Catholic Church and three residents the Orthodox Church. One resident had no denomination and the denomination was not determined for two residents.

There is an important road border crossing to Poland at the Duklapass near Vyšný Komárnik . There the 1st order Slovak road 73 merges into the Polish national road 9 , both part of the European road 371 .
