Kukova (Hungarian Kükemező ) is a municipality in the northeast of Slovakia with 741 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník of, a circle kraj Prešovský lies and traditional landscape Šariš is counted.

geography

The municipality is located in the southern part of the Lower Beskids in the middle Topľatal , more precisely in the side valley of the Topola brook . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 210  m nm and is 22.5 kilometers from Prešov and 33.5 kilometers from Svidník .

Neighboring municipalities are Stuľany , Koprivnica and Marhaň in the north, Kalnište in the northeast, Lúčka in the east, Kračúnovce in the south, Pušovce in the southwest and Želmanovce in the west.

history

Kuková was first mentioned in writing in 1342 as Keykmezew . In the Middle Ages, the village was owned by both the Chmeľovec manor and local lords. In 1427 there are 24 portals . The property came to the Bán family in the 16th century after the Reformation gained a foothold in large parts of the Kingdom of Hungary; In the end it remained the largest landowner until 1945. In 1828 there were 69 houses and 530 residents who were employed as furriers, farmers, wheelwrighters and weavers, and in the 19th century there were numerous orchards.

The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic there was a large estate with a distillery and three water mills. After 1945, residents increasingly commute to industrial plants in surrounding towns such as Giraltovce , Prešov and Košice.

According to the 2011 census, Kuková had 703 inhabitants, 601 of whom were Slovaks and one Russian , one Czech and one Ukrainian . 99 inhabitants did not provide any information on ethnicity .

358 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 173 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 31 residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Orthodox Church; one resident professed a different denomination. Seven residents had no denomination and 102 residents had no denomination.
