Marhaň (until 1927 Slovak and "Marhoňa"; Hungarian Margonya ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 964 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Bardejov , a Prešovský kraj district , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

The municipality is located in the southern part of the Low Beskids , more precisely its lower part Ondavská vrchovina in the middle Topľatal . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 195 m nm and is 24 kilometers from Bardejov and 36 kilometers from Prešov .
Neighboring communities are Kučín in the north, Valkovce in the east, Lascov in the southeast, briefly Kalnište in the south, Vyšný Kručov in the west and Harhaj and Porúbka in the northwest.
history
Marhaň was first mentioned in writing in 1277 as Margan and was built on an old road that runs through the Topľatal. It belonged to a group of lower nobility, from 1299 to the middle of the 15th century the Aba family, more precisely their Drieňov branch . In 1427 there are 27 portals in a tax register. In the early modern period, the owners changed relatively often, after which the most important owners came from the families of Báthory (16th century) and Dessewffy (18th to 20th century).
In 1787 the village had 48 houses and 456 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 66 houses and 495 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and livestock farming and were also known as roofers, basket makers and shindlers. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a distillery and a saw in the village.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 967 people living in Marhaň, of whom 890 were Slovaks, 13 Roma and one Russian and one Ukrainian each. 62 residents gave no information in this regard. 715 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 156 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 22 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, four residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident to the Reformed Church. Ten residents had no denomination and the denomination of 59 residents was not determined.
