Cigeľka ( Slovak until 1927 "Cigolka" - until 1946 "Cigelka"; Russian Ціґелька / Zigelka , Hungarian Cigelka ) is a community in Okres Bardejov in north- eastern Slovakia with Ruthenian and Roma residents. It is located in the valley of the Oľchovec river under the Busov mountain ( 1002  m ) near the Polish border, 20 km from Bardejov . In the village there is a Greek Catholic temple of Saints Cosmas and Damian from 1816, where the later Bishop of Prešov Pavol Peter Gojdič performed his first liturgy .

history

The village was founded around the year 1400 under German law. The first written mention of the place comes from 1414. In the following centuries it belonged to the rule of Zborov Castle (Makovica Manor). In the 19th century, the village was affected by emigration to North America for economic reasons . In 1947, at the instigation of the Soviet authorities, part of the population moved to Ukraine (in particular the village of Khomut, now Zelenyj Haj (Зелений Гай) in Rivne Oblast ). From the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century, most returned to Slovakia.

The village has a memorial to the victims of World War II from Cigeľka - especially the seven young boys who fought in the war without proper training and some Jewish families whose members died in concentration camps . The monument was inaugurated in October 1989. It was designed by the painter Mikuláš Lovacký.

Mineral water

There is a mineral spring of the same name in the village. In the "Almanac of the Baths of the Czechoslovak Republic" from 1949 Cigeľka is mentioned as a bath where gastric diseases, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, heart and blood vessels and skin diseases are treated. Today, however, in contrast to neighboring Polish Wysowa-Zdrój , Cigeľka no longer has the status of a spa . In addition to salt mineral water, there are also some sources with sour lumps in the village.
