Beloveža (Hungarian Bélavézse - until 1907 Belovezsa ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 784 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Bardejov , a district of the Prešovský kraj and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the Low Beskydy Mountains in a valley of a tributary of the Topľa . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 295 m nm and is nine kilometers from Bardejov .
Neighboring municipalities are Andrejová and Šarišské Čierne in the north, Hažlín in the east, Hrabovec and Komárov in the south and Bardejov (district Bardejovská Nová Ves) in the west.
history
Beloveža was founded on the territory of the medieval Makovica manor ; the first written tradition comes from the year 1355 (as Belawese ). The name is most likely derived from the words biela (= white, f.) And veža (= tower). Other historical names are Belowesa (1492), Bellowecscha (1736) and Belovezsa (1808). In 1427 there are 52 portals in the village , at the end of the 15th century it was devastated by a Polish army.
In 1787 there were 75 houses and 452 inhabitants and in 1828 79 houses and 585 inhabitants, who were particularly known as basket makers.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 829 inhabitants in Beloveža, including 614 Slovaks, 198 Russians, four Ukrainians, three Czechs and one Roma. Nine residents gave no information in this regard. 706 residents belonged to the Greek Catholic Church, 87 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 17 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, four residents to the Orthodox Church and one inhabitant to the Evangelical Methodist Church. Four residents had no denomination and ten residents had no denomination.
