Osikov (until 1927 Slovak and "Osikov"; Hungarian Oszikó - until 1907 Ossikó ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 969 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Bardejov , a Prešovský kraj district , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

The village is located on the eastern slope of the Čergov Mountains in the Raslavická brázda furrow . The center of the village is at an altitude of 368  m nm and is 15 kilometers from Bardejov .

Neighboring municipalities are Bartošovce in the north, Vaniškovce in the east, very briefly Raslavice in the south-east, Geraltov in the south, Terňa in the south-west and Fričkovce in the north-west.

history

Michaelskirche

Osikov was first mentioned in writing as Osiko in 1296 and was then owned by the Perényi family . In 1427 a total of 52 portals were recorded in a tax register. In the 16th century the village was part of the Hertník estate, the most important owners were Forgách (from the 16th to the 18th century) and Anhalt (in the 19th century). In 1787 the village had 75 houses and 519 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 109 houses and 826 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and the manufacture of shingles. In 1848 a saw was in operation.

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

The name is probably derived from the Slovak word osika (German quivering poplar ).

According to the 2011 census, Osikov had 969 inhabitants, 951 of whom were Slovaks and one each from Moravia, Russia and Czech; one resident indicated a different ethnic group. 14 residents gave no information in this regard. 938 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, eleven residents the Greek Catholic Church and three residents the Protestant Church AB. The denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
