Kalnište (German since the 18th century Kalnischt or Kalnosch , Hungarian kalnas ) is a municipality in the northeast of Slovakia with 520 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník of, a circle kraj Prešovský lies and traditional landscape Šariš is counted.
geography
The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Lower Beskids in the central Topľatal . The stream Viničný potok flows through it. The center of the village is at an altitude of 192 m nm and is five kilometers from Giraltovce , 28 kilometers from Prešov and 33 kilometers from Svidník .
Neighboring municipalities are Lascov in the north, Brezov in the northeast, Lužany pri Topli in the southeast, Lúčka in the south, Kuková in the west and Vyšný Kručov and Marhaň in the northwest.
history
Kalnište as a place emerged around the middle of the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1363 as Kalnas . The mention also refers to the Kálnássy family , who took their name from the place and owned a large part of the estates until the 19th century.
A mill is mentioned in 1412, and in 1427 there were a total of 31 portals . In 1541 a wooden church was built. Around 1600 the village consisted of 18 inhabited subordinate houses, a church and parish, a mill and a school.
In 1828 there were 59 houses and 431 inhabitants.
The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Kalnište had 553 residents, including 530 Slovaks, seven Roma, two Czechs and one Ukrainian. 13 residents gave no information in this regard. 399 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 115 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 13 residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Orthodox Church. Two residents were non-denominational and ten residents had no denomination.

Kalnište can be reached by 3rd order road 576004, a junction of 1st order road 73 three and a half kilometers away . The nearest train station (Nemcovce) is in Lipníky on the Strážske – Prešov railway line .
