Krajná bystrá (until 1927 Slovak "Bystrá" or "Krajná Bystra", Hungarian Bátorhegy - until 1907 Krajnóbisztra ) is a municipality in the northeast of Slovakia with 466 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník , a circle of Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Low Beskydy Mountains in the foothills of the Laborecká vrchovina mountains near the border with Poland and extends along the valley of the Hluboký creek , a tributary of Ladomírka in the Ondava river system . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 374  m nm and is 14 kilometers from Svidník .

Neighboring municipalities are Dukla (PL, Barwinek ) in the north, Vyšný Komárnik in the northeast, Nižný Komárnik in the east, Krajná Poľana and Hunkovce in the south, Korejovce in the west and Medvedie and Krajná Porúbka in the northwest.

history

Krajná Bystrá as a place emerged between 1573 and 1598 as part of the settlement of the northern part of the then Sáros County and belonged to the dominion of Makovica . The first written mention from 1618 records the place name as Biztra . Difficult living conditions repeatedly prompted the population to flee or emigrate, for example in 1712. In 1787 there were 39 houses and 252 inhabitants who were employed in forestry, livestock farming and as manufacturers of wooden shingles.

The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the Second World War, the population supported anti-fascist partisans, which is why the Wehrmacht had the residents relocated and the village set on fire in 1944.

After 1945, large parts of the population worked in industrial areas in Košice and Svidník and as forester.

In 2015, a bust for Vasiľ Biľak was placed in a public square in Krajná Bystrá, his birthplace, which caused a nationwide controversy.

According to the 2011 census, Krajná Bystrá had 384 residents, including 209 Slovaks, 132 Russians, 13 Roma, four Czechs and one Moravian and one Ukrainian. 24 residents gave no information in this regard. 333 residents committed to the Greek Catholic Church, 14 residents to the Orthodox Church, twelve residents to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Church AB and the Reformed Church; one resident professed a different denomination. Three residents were non-denominational and 19 residents had no denomination.
