Vasiľ Biľak (born August 11, 1917 in Bátorhegy , Sáros County , Hungary , Austria-Hungary (today Krajná Bystrá, Slovakia ); † February 6, 2014 in Bratislava ; frequent spelling in German Vasil Bilak ) was a Czechoslovak or Slovak communist politician of Russian origin and from January to August 1968 party leader of the Slovak communists .

Life

Vasiľ Biľak originally worked as a tailor. From 1955 to 1968 and 1969 to 1971 he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia (ÚV KSS); 1962 to 1968 he was secretary and from January to August 1968 general secretary of the ÚV KSS; from April 1968 to December 1988 Biľak was a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (ÚV KSČ). From November 1968 to December 1988 he was secretary of the ÚV KSČ and had a certain influence over foreign policy and ideology. From 1960 to 1989 he was a member of the Czechoslovak Parliament.

In 1968 he belonged to the conservative wing of the KSČ (KPTsch) and was one of those who signed the " invitation letter " calling for Soviet intervention. He supported the policy of so-called normalization based on conservative, neo-Stalinist positions. In December 1989 he was expelled from the KSČ. Biľak died at the age of 96 on February 6, 2014 in Bratislava.
