Harald Schweiger (born June 2, 1927 in Vienna ; † February 16, 2009 there ) was an Austrian zoologist .

Life

Harald Schweiger studied at the University of Vienna and completed his studies in December 1950 with a doctorate. He then worked for the Lower Austrian State Museum . In 1964 he was appointed to the University of Istanbul , where he taught as a professor until 1969. In 1976 Schweiger became Director of Nature Conservation of Lower Austria and in 1979 Real Councilor . In 1966 he was awarded the Theodor Körner Prize . Schweiger was a specialist in the fauna of Turkey, zoogeography , ecology and nature conservation as well as a beetle specialist. He also published several writings on his travels, especially here on the animal world. As Lower Austrian nature conservation director, he campaigned for the creation of nature parks such as the Blockheide-Gmünd Nature Park and the Heidenreichsteiner Moor Nature Park . Schweiger's grave is located at Jedleseer Friedhof (Gr. 7, R. 1, No. 10) in Vienna.
