Vyšný Mirošov (until 1965 Slovak and "Vyšnyj Mirošov", Rusyn Вышній Мирошів / Wyschnij Myroschiw ; Hungarian Felsőmerse - until 1907 Felsőmirossó ) is a municipality in the northeast of Slovakia with 598 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník , a District of Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Low Beskydy Mountains on the upper reaches of the Mirošovec stream ( Ondava river system ) near the state border with Poland . The municipality is mountainous and particularly wooded in the north. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 344  m nm and is 13 kilometers from Svidník and 21 kilometers from Bardejov .

Neighboring municipalities are Krempna (PL) in the north, Roztoky in the east, Nižný Mirošov in the south-east, Dubová in the south, Mikulášová in the west and Hutky in the north-west.

history

The place was founded between 1553 and 1567 and was first mentioned in writing as Felsö Meraso in the last year mentioned. At that time the village, run by a mayor , belonged to the Makovica estate , in the 18th century to the Aspremont family and in the 19th century to Szécsény .

In 1787 the village had 74 houses and 474 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 110 houses and 804 inhabitants who lived from forestry and livestock farming and as weavers. As in many other places in the area, there were several waves of emigration in the second half of the 19th century. During the First World War , the place was temporarily occupied by Russian troops from 1914 to 1915.

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Vyšný Mirošov had 579 inhabitants, including 265 Slovaks, 206 Russians, 60 Roma, 13 Ukrainians, five Russians and three Czechs; one resident indicated a different ethnic group. 26 residents gave no information in this regard. 525 residents committed themselves to the Orthodox Church, 18 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 15 residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Jehovah's Witnesses; one resident professed a different denomination. Two residents were without a denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
