Nižný Komárnik (Hungarian Alsókomárnok - until 1907 Alsókomarnik ) is a municipality in the northeast of Slovakia with 190 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Svidník of, a circle kraj Prešovský lies and traditional landscape Šariš is counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the northern part of the Lower Beskids on the upper reaches of the Ladomírka , near the state border with Poland . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 362 m nm and is 14 kilometers from Svidník .
Neighboring communities are Vyšný Komárnik in the north, Dukla and Jaśliska (both PL) in the north-east, Príkra in the east, Bodružal in the south-east, Krajná Poľana in the south and Krajná Bystrá in the west.
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1618 as Also Komarnik and at that time belonged to the estate of Makovica Castle . In 1828 there were 33 houses and 253 inhabitants. In the late 19th century a steam saw and a match factory were in operation here, but there were also several waves of emigration at the same time. During the First World War the village was almost completely destroyed and the steam saw, mills and match factory all ceased operations.
The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants worked as forest workers. During the battle for the Duklapass in late 1944, a large part of the village was destroyed, but then rebuilt.

According to the 2011 census, Nižný Komárnik had 181 inhabitants, including 68 Slovaks , 50 Roma , 46 Russian and one Ukrainian . 16 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
149 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, six residents the Orthodox Church, three residents the Roman Catholic Church and one resident of the Evangelical Church AB. Two residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 20 residents was not determined.
Buildings and monuments
- wooden Greek Catholic Church of the Protection of the Theotokos from 1938, which replaced an 18th century church that burned out during World War I. The church is a national cultural monument.
