Hunkovce (Hungarian Felsőhunkóc - to 1902 Hunkóc ) is a municipality and a town in the north-east of Slovakia , with a population of 340 (as of December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Svidník , a district of Prešovský kraj .

The municipality is located on the southern slope of the Low Beskids on the Ladomirka brook , between the town of Svidník 11 kilometers to the southwest and the Duklapass nine kilometers to the north .

history

The place was founded around 1525 by a mayor and was first mentioned in writing in 1548. The village was part of the Makovica Castle estate . In 1828 there were 33 houses and 251 residents.

  • Greek Catholic wooden church from the end of the 18th century. The Church of the Dormition of the Most Blessed Theotokos (Kostol Usnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky) is a baroque three-part wooden object on a low stone foundation. It was repaired in 1947. The original interior is no longer there, only a few icons are now in a museum in Bardejov. The church is in the middle of a cemetery with old graves.
  • Baroque Greek Catholic Church from 1931
  • German military cemetery established in 1995 with almost 3,100 buried Wehrmacht soldiers who died during the Eastern Carpathian operation in late 1944
