Świdnik [ ˈɕfʲidɲik ] is a Polish city in the Lublin Voivodeship about ten kilometers east of Lublin . It is the seat of the Powiat Świdnik .
The name comes from the plant Świdwa , which is called blood-red dogwood ( Cornus Sanguinea ) in German .

The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1392. The name of the place was Świdnik Major , later also Świdnik Minor . In 1795 the place fell to the Habsburg Empire . In 1809 Świdnik became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 part of Congress Poland . After the First World War , the city was Polish. Before the outbreak of the Second World War , an airfield was built in the city. In 1951, the production of parts for the MiG-15 began near the airfield . In 1954 the construction of a helicopter factory began.
