history

Construction of the hangars in 1934/35

The first plans to build an airport can be dated back to 1934. In 1935, construction of the airport began on an area of 146 hectares. Two years later, two additional hangars, additional farm buildings and a fuel tank were built. In 1938 a pilot school was established. The official opening is dated June 4, 1939. After three months of military use of the airport during the Second World War, the airport was taken over by the German Air Force. The military school was bombed by the German air force. The air force of the Wehrmacht established an air base command between 1941 and 1944 and from 1942 operated the Air Force Technical School 1 on the site. When the attack on the Soviet Union began in 1941, Kampfgeschwader 54 with its twin-engine Junkers Ju 88A bombers lay here for a few weeks. It was not until the beginning of 1944 that air units were again occupied when parts of Combat Squadrons 51 and 3 were stationed here. In July, Messerschmitt Bf 109G and Focke-Wulf Fw 190A fighters of Jagdgeschwader 51 and 54 flew from here against the nearby Eastern Front, before the airfield was captured by units of the Soviet 2nd Panzer Army on July 24th . The airport area was completely destroyed.

After the war, the PZL Świdnik PZL Świdnik helicopter factory moved to the airport in 1951 .

New construction 2008–2012

The old runway and all buildings were demolished. A completely new building was erected. A terminal, a runway with a length of 2520 m, a width of 45 m + 2 × 7.5 m and the necessary auxiliary buildings were built. In the first stage of expansion, the terminal has a capacity of one million passengers; in a later, optional stage, it will be 3.2 million. On December 17, 2012 landed at 12:20 UTC as the first airliner, a Boeing 737 of Ryanair (EI-DLK) from London Stansted Coming flight number FR9524 at the airport of Lublin. The return flight to London-Stansted with flight number FR9525 took place at 13:05 UTC. Wizz Air operated a single Airbus A320-200 base at the airport until June 2018 .
