Harmanec (German Hermanez , rarely Hermanetz or Hermannsdorf , Hungarian Hérmand - until 1888 Hermanec ) is a municipality in central Slovakia with 839 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
It is located in the valley of the Bystrica River , at the foot of the Great Fatra and the Kremnica Mountains , nine kilometers from Banská Bystrica .
Neighboring municipalities are Staré Hory in the north, Banská Bystrica ( Uľanka district ) in the east and southeast, Riečka in the south, Kordíky in the southwest and Dolný Harmanec in the west.
history
The place was officially created on January 1, 1957 when it was spun off from the neighboring municipality of Dolný Harmanec . The history of the settlement begins at the beginning of the 19th century, when a paper mill (founded in 1829 by FS Leicht) was built in the area of today's municipality.
Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia.
Today the paper mill continues to operate and is called SHP Harmanec (SHP stands for Slovak Hygienic Paper). The map manufacturer VKÚ ( Vojenský kartografický ústav , German Military Cartographic Institute), which has been producing maps since 1948 and was privatized in 2002, has been based in Kynceľová since 2016 , but still bears the company name VKÚ Harmanec, sro

According to the 2011 census, 884 inhabitants lived in Harmanec, of whom 771 were Slovaks , ten Roma , seven Czechs , four Magyars , two Russians and one German . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 88 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
486 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 45 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, four residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Orthodox Church, two residents each for the Apostolic Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Old Catholic Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 218 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 118 inhabitants.
