Medzibrod (1927-1946 Slovak "Medzibrod nad Hronom" - until 1927 "Medzibrodie"; Hungarian Mezőköz - to 1888 Medzibrod ) is a municipality in the middle of Slovakia , with a population of 1,383 (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Banská Bystrica , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the Horehronie landscape on the right bank of the Hron , nestled between the Low Tatras and the Poľana . Veľká Chochuľa ( 1753  m nm ) rises above the village . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 398  m nm and is located 20 kilometers east of Banská Bystrica and 23 kilometers west of Brezno .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1455 as Megywbrodye , but was probably already in the 14th century. The name is derived from the former location between two fords. The village belonged to the Liptsch Castle estate until 1848 . Medzibrod has a long history of mining, with a former gold mine and an iron ore mine that was mined from the 17th to the 19th century. The antimony ore was eventually mined in 1936-46.
