Hrochoť (until 1927 Slovak also "Chrochoť"; Hungarian Horhát ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 1472 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Banská Bystrica , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The village is located in the Poľana Mountains above the Hučava brook and by the source of the Hrochoťský brook . The municipality is extended in a west-east direction and mostly only 1–2 km wide and includes large parts of the Hrochoťská dolina in the extinct volcanic mountain Poľana; large parts belong to the Poľana Protected Landscape Area . The center of the village is at an altitude of 636 m nm and is 20 kilometers from Banská Bystrica and 22 kilometers from Zvolen .
Neighboring municipalities are Dúbravica and Poniky in the north, Strelníky and Ľubietová in the northeast, Hronec and Brezno in the east, Očová in the south, Sebedín-Bečov in the southwest and Čerín in the west.
history
Hrochoť was first mentioned in writing as Horhagh in 1424 . After a privilege of 1479, the inhabitants were royal hunters and were not in a subject relationship to the estate of Vígľaš . Between the 16th and 19th centuries they were also in the service of the counts of Sohl County . In the 18th and 19th centuries, the inhabitants were employed in forestry and livestock farming, as well as manufacturers of clapboard, sawn timber and carters.
Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 1499 inhabitants lived in Hrochoť, of which 1404 were Slovaks, four Roma, three Czechs, two Magyars and two Russians and one Moravian and one Russian. 82 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity. 881 residents committed themselves to the Evangelical Church AB, 254 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 13 residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, 12 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses and five residents each to the Old Catholic Church and the Reformed Church; all other denominations had fewer than five believers. 128 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 174 residents was not determined.
