The administrative seat is in Zvolen .

geography

Poľana ( 1458  m nm )

The CHKO Poľana is located in the middle of Slovakia; on the mountain Hrb ( 1255  m nm ) on the northern border lies the geographical center of Slovakia. The majority of the area is formed by the Poľana Mountains , which belong to the Slovak Central Uplands . It is an extinct volcanic mountain range, the heart of which is the tertiary stratovolcano Poľana. The central part is formed by a caldera, an almost exactly annular depression, the cross section of which is about seven kilometers (for comparison, the cross section of the entire volcano is about 18 km). The Hučava brook breaks through one side of the caldera and collects other brooks from the area to flow into the Slatina at Zvolen . On the ridge near the caldera are the six highest mountains in the mountains, including the Poľana ( 1458  m nm ). The eastern part of the CHKO is called Veporské vrchy . In contrast to Poľana, it belongs to the Slovak Ore Mountains . The whole area is also characterized by bizarre rock formations.

The whole area belongs to the catchment area of Hron .

Flora and fauna

Forests predominate in the area of the CHKO. In some places the view opens up from the mountain meadows, which are locally called poľany (singular poľana ), which also gave the mountains its name. In addition to the economic forests, you can still find primeval forests in some places, for example in the Zadná Poľana nature reserve. Spruce , beech and mountain ash grow here . Here the warmth-loving flora mixes with a mountain flora. Among the protected plant species, one can find the Hungarian soldanelle , globe flower , pine bear moss , crown light carnation , the round-leaved sundew and the Siberian iris , as well as plants from the orchid family .

From the bird species you can here spotted eagle , eagle owl , pygmy owl , white-backed woodpeckers , ring chokes and black storks find. Brown bears , wolves and lynxes live constantly in the forests .
