The Protected Landscape Area Východné Karpaty ( Slovak Chránená krajinná oblasť Východné Karpaty , literally Protected Landscape Area Eastern Carpathians) is a protected landscape area in northeastern Slovakia . It covers a narrow strip of land on the Slovak-Polish border in the Lower Beskids and lies entirely in the political district of Prešovský kraj (Okresy Humenné , Medzilaborce , Snina , Stropkov and Svidník ).

The administrative headquarters are in Medzilaborce .

history

The landscape protection area was originally established in 1977 and was 988.10 km² in size, including a 309.10 km² protection zone. Since 1992 it has been part of the UNESCO Eastern Carpathian Biosphere Reserve , together with the neighboring Polish area. After the National Park Poloniny was declared in 1997 in the east of the CHKO, the area was reduced to 253.07 km². The border between the national park and the CHKO lies in the Udava valley near Osadné .

geography

:

Most of the protected landscape area is located in the Laborecká vrchovina mountainous region in the Lower Beskids and constitutes an i. d. Usually three to four kilometers wide strip of land south of the Polish border under protection. Geologically speaking, it is a flysch mountain range . The area includes the main Carpathian ridge and the upper ends of the north-south valleys and stretches from Vápeník under Filipovský vrch ( 705  m nm ) over the Duklapass ( 502  m nm ) at Vyšný Komárnik , the Čertižné pass ( 581  m nm ) at Čertižné and Lupków Pass ( 640  m nm ) near Palota , the highest mountain of the CHKO Vysoký grúň ( 905  m nm ) near Vyšná Jablonka , to the Udava valley under the mountain Rydošova ( 877  m nm ) near Osadné. Due to its location, the area is at the transition from the western to the eastern Carpathians . The most important river of the area is the Laborec , western parts of the CHKO belong to the catchment area of the Ondava .

The CHKO area is richly forested, more than in the Laborecká vrchovina hill country itself. The most widespread are beeches , less the firs and only to a lesser extent the oaks . The common spruces have been planted artificially, as no part of the CHKO reaches the necessary vegetation level. Both West and East Carpathian endemics can be found here. Some examples of rare or endangered plants are: Tithymalus sojakii (genus milkweed ), Heart-leaved Comfrey , Carniolan Rabid, or Great Telekie . In some places there are also peat bog communities with rare species of mosses.

The original forests are home to various rare and endangered animal species such as wolves , lynxes , brown bears , otters , owls and black storks .
