The Protected Landscape Area Ponitrie ( Slovak Chránená krajinná oblasť Ponitrie ) is a protected landscape area in southeast Slovakia . It covers the mountains Tribeč (German Tribetzgebirge ) and Vtáčnik (German Vogelgebirge ) and is mostly in the political districts of Nitriansky kraj (Okresy Nitra , Topoľčany and Zlaté Moravce ) and Trenčiansky kraj (Okresy Partizánske and Prievidza ). Smaller parts are in Banskobystrický kraj (Okresy Žarnovica and Žiar nad Hronom ). The name refers to the valley of the Nitra River , which flows north and west of the protected landscape area.

The seat of the administration is in Nitra .

geography

Mount Žarnov with andesite rocks

The landscape protection area is made up of two different mountain units, which differ in geological structure, forest types and flora and fauna. The Tribetzgebirge is a mountain range formed by granite , dolomite , limestone and slate . A specific feature of the mountains are rocks that occur particularly in peripheral areas. Like the Little Carpathians or the Inowetz further west, it juts out into the Slovakian Danube lowlands, so the area is home to more heat-loving plants than the Vogelgebirge, due to other factors such as the climate or exposure. In the Zoborská lesostep nature reserve , steppe and forest-steppe species are represented.

The Vogelgebirge in the northeast, however, is of volcanic origin and is formed by volcanic rocks from the Tertiary, mainly andesite and rhyolite . It is part of the Slovak Central Uplands and is interesting because of its bizarre rock formations. Some of them can be found in Buchlova, Kláštorská skala and on Vtáčnik, for example.

Flora and fauna

The typical trees for the Tribetz Mountains are oaks , hornbeams and, in higher parts, beeches . Rare or endangered plant species grow there, such as Thlaspi jankae (genus Hellerkräuter ), sage germander , colored flat pea , dwarf iris , spring adonis , pasque flower , Turk's union and others. In the Vogelgebirge, shrubs, predominantly made of beech, combined with spruce, are common. European yew trees are less common . In contrast to the Tribetzgebirge, more mountain plants grow here, such as: gray alpine east , Austrian chamois , forest grove , plane buttercup , Aconitum moldavicum (genus Eisenhut ) and Crepis sibirica (genus Pippau ).

More than 5100 species of invertebrates and 220 species of vertebrates are known from the animal world . Sometimes you can find lynx and wild cats in the mountains . “Specialties” of the Tribetz Mountains are mouflons and fallow deer , which were not native until 1867. Some birds of prey are the Eastern Imperial Eagle , Lesser Spotted Eagle and Honey Buzzard . From the invertebrates z. B. the billy oak , rhinoceros beetle , wine twister and the great saw-hawk .
